On the topological social choice model

چکیده
The main goal of this paper is to show that if a finite connected CW complex admits a continuous, symmetric, and unanimous choice function for some number n41 of agents, then the choice space is contractible. On the other hand, if one removes the finiteness, we give a complete characterization of the possible spaces; in particular, noncontractible spaces are indeed possible. These results extend earlier well-known results of Chichilnisky and Heal. r 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: D71

The topological approach to social choice was developed by Graciela Chichilnisky in the beginning of the eighties. The main result in this area (known as the resolution of the topological social choice paradox) shows that a space of preferences admits of a continuous, anonymous, and unanimous aggregation rule for every number of individuals if and only if the space is contractible. Furthermore,...
متن کاملResolving the Topological Social Choice Paradox
1.1. Topological Social Choice Theory. Social choice theory aims to understand the nature of, and provide methods for, the aggregation of individual preferences to yield a social preference which is fair and satisfactory to individual voters on an axiomatic ground. An important example of this is in popular elections. In the 1980s, Chichilnisky and colleagues developed a topological approach pi...

متن کاملThe Lobbying, Bribery, and Compliance: An Evolutionary Model of Social Factors
Abstract Connecting to rule-makers in order to set favorable rules (lobbying) or paying government executives to bend the current rule (bribing) are the two main strategies for influencing government. This study in an evolutionary game model explain why bribing may become widespread while other states like compliance and cooperative lobbying are Pareto superior. The theoretical model is used ...

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of matrix treatment and modern group reality therapy based on choice theory on resilience and social adjustment in methamphetamine-dependent men who are treated with buprenorphine. Methods: The research was a experimental study with a pretest-posttest with control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of All m...

We will show that the Arrow impossibility theorem for binary social choice rules that there exists no binary social choice rule which satisfies transitivity, Pareto principle, independence of irrelevant alternatives (IIA), and has no dictator, and Amartya Sen’s liberal paradox for binary social choice rules that there exists no binary social choice rule which satisfies acyclicity, Pareto princi...
